A scale is a set of questions, often called items, that are grouped together to help measure an underlying concept. For example, if we wanted to find out about how much about someone's resilience, we might ask them to rate (or score) the extent to which they agree they demonstrate a set of behaviours, such as "I quickly bounce back from set-backs". We would then create an average score across all the items to get a sense of their skills at being resilient.
